WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE...
Today we are experiencing a bit of a weather "blip". After a mild
low-snow winter and nice early spring, as I write this I can see
wet snow falling as I look out towards Old Montreal. According to
the experts, this is a one day aberration and we should be getting
back to milder weather tomorrow.
That's good news, since this past weekend I took my first BIXI Bike
ride of the season. BIXI is Montreal's new (last year) bike sharing
system. The way it works is pretty cool. There are about 400 BIXI
stations in the greater downtown area of the city with 5,000 bikes.
Whenever you want to use one, you make a payment by credit card at
the closest BIXI station, pick up a bike there and then pedal it to
your destination. You just drop off your bike at the station closest
to your destination and then go about your business.
On average, BIXI stations are located within 300 metres of each
other so you never have to go far to find one. The system is wildly
popular here, with many folks choosing BIXI bikes over the subway
and/or bus to get to/from work during the fair weather months
(i.e. mid-April to mid-November).
I bought a low-cost season pass this year and I will use BIXI bikes
for pleasure rides around the city and to get to/from events such
as the Jazzfest and Comedyfest to save gas and avoid parking hassles.
So far, the BIXI system has been purchased by London, UK, Boston,
Mass., and Melbourne, Australia. Toronto has also purchased a trial
system. So, if you visit Montreal, be sure to try out the BIXI bikes.
I should mention that the name BIXI is a contraction of the words
"BIke" and "taXI" and it was entirely designed and built in Quebec.
